Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 for Nursing Home Medical Directors. This session provides a detailed overview of the Minimum Data Set system currently in place in nursing homes and the changes envisioned with the new version 3.0 to be rolled out in the fall of 2009. Dr. Leible traces the history and relevance of the MDS, explain the process of data collection in creating the MDS, demonstrate how the MDS is used in the Resident Assessment Instrument for care planning, as a reimbursement tool, and by CMS for monitoring quality, and recognize the changes in the new MDS 3.0 and their relevance to medical directors and physicians in long term care.
Managing the Difficult D’s in LTC: An Evidence–Based Approach to Dementia and Difficult Behaviors. This session, led by Dr. Cari Levy, Medical Director for Piñon’s Rowan Community and chair of Colorado’s Medical Director Association, presents recent data on the use of anti–psychotic medications to treat patients with dementia and provides case studies to illustrate alternative approaches to the management of difficult behaviors associated with dementia.
